Like humans, animals that suffer from trauma, anemia or bleeding disorders, can also require life-saving transfusions. Because we see so many patients in need of transfusions, the Animal Emergency created a blood donor program to help meet it's blood bank needs, as well as serve area veterinarians in need of blood donations. We are ALWAYS looking for donors. However, to ensure all blood products used are of the optimum quality, we have developed certain criteria for evaluating the health status of potential donors. Here is a summary of our requirements for entry into the program
To ensure that all blood products used are of optimal quality, we have developed certain criteria for admission to the program and for assessing the health of the donors.
Canine Requirements
- New entrants must be between one and six years of age
- 50 lbs or greater, lean body weight
- Good temperament
- Healthy and without a heart murmur
- Current on vaccinations, must provide proof
- Must be on heartworm preventative during the six-month flea and tick season. Year round treatment may be required if the pet travels.
- Must not be receiving any medication other than heartworm, flea and tick preventative.
- Never have received a blood transfusion
- Donors will be retired from the program on the month/year that they turn 8 years, or sooner if a medical or behavioral concern arises or the owner no longer wishes to participate
- Dogs must donate at least 4 times per year to receive full benefits of the program
Feline Requirements - New entrants must be between one and six years of age
- 10 lbs or greater, lean body weight
- Good temperament
- Healthy and without a heart murmur
- Indoor only and all housemate cats must also be indoor. No fostering or pet sitting of other cats.
- Current on vaccinations, must provide proof
- Must not be receiving any medications other than heartworm, flea, or tick preventatives.
- Never have received a blood transfusion
- Donors will be retired from the program on the month/year that they turn 8 years, or sooner if a medical or behavioral problems arises or the owner no longer wishes to participate
- Cats must donate at least 3 times per year to receive full benefits of the program
